May 21, 2019 – The United States government removed its import taxes on aluminum and steel from Canada and Mexico Friday, ending an almost yearlong trade dispute between the three countries and setting the stage for the ratification of USMCA, the new NAFTA replacement deal.
According to The Canadian Press, Canada and Mexico have also removed their retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, including duties on U.S. steel and aluminum and more than 70 other products.
USMCA, or the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, was officially signed in November 2018, is still awaiting approval from lawmakers. In February, Marc Garneau, Canada’s minister of transport, said that it was unlikely Canada would ratify unless the tariffs were lifted.
